The schools keep coming back for Young Creative Chevrolet!
08 DecTwo years ago, the School of Visual Arts of Biel and Berne decided to enter the Young Creative Chevrolet contest for the first time and have participated successfully ever since.
In 2000, the School of Visual Arts of Biel joined with the School of Visual Arts of Berne to become the School of Visual Arts of Berne and Biel (B:B), a center of excellence for all visual arts and craftwork in the Canton of Berne. It consists of nearly 2500 students in various departments and disciplines: they graduate in preparatory courses, classes in graphic design and ceramic design; apprentices of all professions connected to visuals arts or craftwork attend classes for professional skills. Furthermore, the school offers post-graduate studies in media management and visual communication, and a broad variety of free courses for anyone to participate in. The school has four locations in the cities of Berne and Biel and employs 250 teachers.
The school in Biel, with its preparatory course, graphic design classes and post-graduate study in visual communication, is a bilingual school with both German and French speaking students and teachers; a combination of two cultures in one place.
Now as the competition enters its fourth year, we took the opportunity to speak to Sven Weber, teacher in graphic design and coordinator of the graphic design classes, about his thoughts on Young Creative Chevrolet.
What inspired your school to enter?
Two years ago, our enthusiastic photography-teacher heard about the Young Creative Chevrolet contest and suggested to our 2nd-year class of graphic designers to enter the contest. They worked hard on their entry, instantly won a price and really enjoyed themselves so we were well motivated to re-enter the following years.
What do you hope to gain from the competition?
It's an excellent opportunity for our students to match their skills against other students in their sector, first on a national, then on a European level. Competing in a contest is always a good experience for young people, and if they win a contest it makes a brilliant reference for any future job application. Moreover, the media coverage of the contest is promoting our school, especially the award-winning students, and is also a good indication of the quality of our education.
What is your impression of competitions like this, what makes Young Creative Chevrolet different?
A very well organized contest with international flair, it unites talented young people from various disciplines in visual arts from all over the world, also preparing them for their professional life. And, my personal impression, an excellent buffet at the award ceremony!
