Forces of nature

Forces of nature
Tomáš Hercog (pictured above), Petr Bača and Jan Berghauer – students at the Faculty of Art and Design at Evangelista Purkyne Univerzity in Usti nad Labem, otherwise known as AA&RF FUD UJEP, in the Czech Republic – took first place* in the YCC 2011 European finals, with their video of a road trip in nature with friends.

YCC caught up with the three winners to learn a little more about the project and, of course, what they each brought to the creative process.

Inspired perfectionism

Tomáš loves photography, travel and wakeboarding, and finds inspiration all around – especially from fellow compatriots Juliana and Jakub, who took the top YCC 2011 prize in photography. For a self-described hard-to-please idealist, it should come as little surprise that Tomáš “feels great (about winning), but there are a lot of things we can do better next time, so I feel we have to work harder…”

As for this coming year, Tomáš is focused on getting his Bachelor’s degree – and, of course, getting “better, faster, stronger!”

Fresh thinking

Petr considers himself a realist, yet is someone who is not content with the status quo. He is also a “petrol-head” and loves anything to do with cars. For the YCC project, he was intrigued by the co-existence of trendy car advertising and the nature surrounding them.

As for winning YCC, Petr believes that a lot of good has and will come out of it. “This whole process,” he says, “can change and enhance our prospects, and teaches us how to do quality work.”

An open mind

Jan considers himself an explorer by nature – and someone who sees a lot of value in sharing ideas. He credits the YCC victory to the team’s joint approach and partnership. “It was interesting practice to have to cooperate, not only when it came to making decisions about technique and shooting the actual video, but to reassuring each other.”

Jan believes the best part of working on YCC is getting a “taste of doing something serious, without any creative limits.”

Congratulations, again, to you three…YCC looks forward to keeping track of your future successes!
