Fashionably grounded

Fresh from claiming the European YCC 2011 title in Fashion, Lubica Mildeová of Slovakia takes a moment with YCC to reflect on what got her there and what she plans to do to keep moving forward. Despite the glamour and attitude of her winning design – let alone the upcoming YCC Award Night gala and other dazzling opportunities the YCC victory might present – Lubica believes that the real value of YCC is far more powerful.

What, who or whose work inspires you? Were there any particular influences for the YCC project?

I admire the work of Martin Margiela, Viktor and Rolf, Rodarte, the house of Balenciaga and some of the young Japanese designers as well. I find inspiration in architecture, modern art, product design and the interaction of several different art fields.

For the contest the inspiration was, of course, the fashion styles starting in the year 1910 – as well as the 1982 sci-fi movie “Blade Runner”.

Is there anything you want to tell us about your creative process and/or how you developed your project?

In my interpretation, the dress became a symbol of development. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brand’s establishment, I combined the historical (fashion) influences with elements of contemporary design to make the dress suitable for this special occasion.

How do you feel that winning YCC might change your outlook, creative approach or prospects for the future?

I am looking forward to seeing how it (the fashion industry) all works when I go on my YCC behind-the-scenes program in an established fashion company – this should be a great experience for me. I’m also interested in the possibility of meeting more professionals and others who are “around” fashion and art from many different countries. And as London is my favorite city, I’m glad I can return there for the YCC award ceremony in September.

Do you have any special plans over the next year?

More work, more design, more fashion.

Finally, what do you think is the most valuable thing about participating in YCC 2011?

Simply put, personal motivation.

Thanks, Lubica, for your refreshing take on your victory – and congratulations again on your win!
